En route to Etosha we will stop at a large African market where you can barter for hand made souvenirs, we will also look out for traditionally dressed women.
Herero women adopted floor length gowns worn by German missionaries in the late 19th century. The dresses are known as Ohorokova and are high necked and have voluminous skirts lavishly gathered below the bust and incorporate multiple petticoats and up to 10 meters of fabric. A horizontal horned headdress called the Otjikava is worn which is a symbol of respect and worn to pay homage to the cows that have historically sustained the Herero.
The Himba people are found in Northern Namibia the women are famous for covering themselves with cosmetic mixture of butterfat and ochre pigment. Otjize cleanses the skin over long periods due to otjize paste, a water scarcity and protects from the hot and dry climate of the Kaokoland, as well as from insect bites. It gives Himba people’s skin and hair plaits a distinctive texture, style, and orange or red tinge, and is often perfumed with the aromatic resin of a local shrub.

19 October – Etosha Pan (B, D)
We will awake early, to see animals as they are stirring with a Sunrise drive. We will return to the lodge for Breakfast. This afternoon we will head into Etosha National Park.
The Etosha Pan and the area that would later come to be known as Etosha National Park was first discovered by Europeans in 1851, when explorers Charles Andersson and Francis Galton came to the wild region in the company of Ovambo traders. Etosha can be loosely translated as “Great White Place” in the Ovambo language.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, a vast majority of the wildlife in the park was wiped out either by severe drought or after being caught in the crossfire of the so-called Border War that engulfed Namibia, South Africa and Angola at the time. Thanks to brave conservation efforts, many of the park’s most precious and revered of beasts have had their numbers greatly replenished in recent years, and today Etosha is once again one of the best places in the world to view Africa’s unique wildlife.
Etosha National Park covers some 22 269 square kilometers. The pan itself covers 23% of the total area. Dinner at lodge
20 October – Onkolo Hide (B)
After Breakfast we will visit the Onkolo hide to see animals coming down to drink. In the afternoon we will revisit Etosha National Park. It’s home to many species, including plains game, over 300 bird species, and four of the Big Five
safari animals.
21 October – Rundu (B, D)
This morning after breakfast we will say farewell to beautiful Onguma and Etosha as we continue our drive north. Today we will cross what is known as the red line. Which is a line separating Northern Namibia from the central and southern regions. North of the line all farm land is generally communal where as south of the line there are commercial farms. The red line is the reason for Namibia’s unique status to export meat across the European Union and more recently
the USA.

22 October – Popa Falls (B)
Today we head east along the Caprivi Strip. Located in North Eastern Namibia it is bordered by
Angola and Botswana to the south and Zambia to the north. Namibia, Botswana and Zambia meet at a single point at the eastern tip of the Strip.
The area is rich in natural wildlife and has mineral resources. Of particular interest to the government of Namibia is that it gives access to the Zambezi River and is thereby a potential trading route to Africa’s East Coast.
It is a corridor for African elephant moving from Botswana and Namibia into Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe. This afternoon we will have a game drive into Mahangu Game Reserve.
